SUMMER AT BANG

This summer, I’ve been doing an ongoing internship with BANG, where I’ve had the chance to be involved in a range of youth-focused programmes like the MP Visit, Wellth Club, and Heritage Club. I’ve also been supporting the team by managing BANG’s social media and creating content to highlight our work and our connection with the wider community.Â
One of the biggest parts of my experience has been helping to plan the visit of Georgia Gould MP and Wellth Club. As a team of interns, we work to bring young people into the BANG office, creating a space where they can take part in interesting and engaging sessions. It has been really rewarding to see the programmes we have developed come to life, and even more so to see how much the young people learned.Â
The Wellth Club focused on mental and physical wellbeing. It was great to be part of a team of interns who helped plan and lead the sessions alongside Thembi, one of BANG’s facilitators. We worked together to design sessions that were both informative and fun. Being involved in the planning process taught me how to create a safe and supportive environment, and how important it is to be open about health and wellbeing with young people.Â
In the Heritage Club, which was led by Lyvonne, I had the chance to explore cultural identity and history alongside other interns. While the interns participated, we also supported the young people taking part in the programme. This experience helped me reflect on my own background and appreciate the diversity around me. The sessions encouraged deeper conversations and made me realise how powerful it is to understand and embrace where you come from.Â
Alongside all of that, I have also been managing BANG’s social media, which has helped me build my communication and creative skills. From writing captions to capturing content at events, I have learned how to represent an organisation in a way that is professional but also connects with people.Â
What I have enjoyed most is being part of something youth-led. Â
BANG has given me the space to contribute ideas, take initiative, and be involved, not just in the background but as an active team member. That has helped me grow in confidence, develop leadership skills, and better understand what it takes to work in community-focused roles.Â
So far, this internship has taught me a lot about teamwork, planning, communication, and the impact young people can have when they are given the chance to lead. I look forward to the rest of the internship and continuing to build on everything I have learned.Â
